Kevin has traveled the world as a keynote speaker on leadership, human capital and entrepreneurship and he is consistently rated among the top keynote speakers at events he attends.

Key Things From This Episode

Key Quotes:
“To grow, you need to find people better than yourself.”
“Life isn’t about getting and having. It’s about giving and being.”
“There are no failures. It’s just win or learn.”

Things to Focus on to Maximize Engagement
3 Keys: Growth. Recognition. Trust.

Be a career coach to your team members. Sit down with each team member a couple times a year and discuss their goals, strengths, and gaps. Figure out if they can achieve those goals within your company. Look for developmental opportunities for your team members. Kevin discusses the power of a hand written note thanking a team member for their work.

Kevin’s Failure
Kevin started his first business immediately after graduating college. He literally lived out of his office. He stored his pillow in his file cabinet, showered at the local YMCA, and would get up early enough to go shower and arrive back at the office and appear to be just arriving for the day.

Kevin underestimated the difficulties of starting a business. He mentions many mistakes he made, as he continued to rack up debt, before calling it quits. He learned that any company is it’s people and that you need to find people better than you in order to grow.

Kevin’s Successful Moment
Kevin received a letter about purchasing his company. He had originally thrown the letter away. He dug it out of the trash and eventually sold his company for millions.

Kevin’s Success Quote
“Life isn’t about getting and having. It’s about giving and being.”

Kevin says, “you can never give away more than will come back to you.”

Kevin’s Advice to New Entrepreneurs
Realize that entrepreneurship is a lifestyle than never ends. There is no failure. It’s win or learn. Keep swinging; even after you strike out. You’re going to lose clients and have horrible days. Bad things will happen, but that is part of the journey. Don’t think about the wins or losses; just keep plugging away at it.

“This really stinks and I’ve wasted a lot of time, but let me try again in a slightly different way.”

One Thing You Can Do Today
There are only two ways to grow a business
1. Sell old stuff to new customers.
2. Sell new stuff to old customers.

Most of us want the new customer, but it is way easier to sell additional things to existing customers. They already know and trust you.
